Solar Thermal Energy

Solar Thermal Energy - What You Should Know....

Photovoltaic Solar Power is, simply, the energy created by converting solar energy into heat. Solar power cells are made out of materials known as semiconductors, usually silicon. A semiconductor has the properties of an insulator, but when exposed to light or heat is capable of conducting electricity.

Solar Energy Collectors - A solar thermal panel is made up of many collectors. A solar energy collector captures the radiant energy from the Sun and converts it into heat.

How does a solar collector convert solar energy into heat?

By taking advantage of a process known as the greenhouse effect.

The basic idea is that the solar energy passes through a layer of glazed glass where it is absorbed by the underlying material. The solar energy excites the molecules in the underlying material resulting in heat. The glazing of the glass prevents the heat from escaping, thereby effectively capturing the heat.

Once the heat from the sun is captured the solar energy collectors can put it to good use!

The Basic Principles of Solar Thermal Hot Water - By preheating the water in your hot water tank your hot water tank doesn’t need to keep turning on to maintain the temperature thereby, eliminating the need to keep pulling power from your electric or gas.

The cold water from your hot water tank runs up to the roof and into the solar panel. It is then distributed to the collectors where it is heated up and then sent back down into the hot water tank. By doing this constantly all cold water that enters the tank when water is used is sent immediately to the solar panels to preheat making your hot water tank turn on much less often.
